Its march and its still cold. This is great! Its raining in almost every part of Pakistan. Some of the northern areas still snowing. End of february: murree was full of fresh soft fluffy white snow. What is it today? the 15th? 16th? According to forecasts another cold wet spell is on its way! This is brilliant! :D

I'm back in the jungle and I miss the internet. Its only me and my ipod. I miss my podcasts. I'm all out of date :/ ... But I've been listening to 1970s to 1990s classic rock. From the legendary Sabbath and Zeppelin to Steppenwolf, Kinks, Kiss, Tom Petty, Steve Miller, Blue Oyster, Doors, Clapton, Beatles ... actually I got hold of a huge album full of great songs. Top 500 Rock Hits. The name says it all ^_^ ... And guess which track is # 1? ... Stairway to Heaven! Seldomly listening to the heavy/thrash/alternative metal genres. Then again its mood dependent. Ashar has me hooked on Porcupine Tree (eventually). Its an interesting group. "Every album's a different genre" and I agree with Ashar there. I've backed up my songs in my ipod in case some shit hits the ceiling. Its a pain when you lose your entire collection. Its never ever the same. Floola to the rescue. *applause*

I'm slowly (really really slowly) phasing away from the heavy metal genre and creeping towards jazz & blues & soul... (why?) *coughs* and its not only me. Everybody I know who shared the same taste in music is moving that way.

Stone Sour's new album is good... NIN's album releases this month! Filmazia is the best channel on cable (only when there's a corny punjabi movie on).. shit they've actually got a website going.. and its kinda good :S ... Remember those funny dubbed shows on STN/NTM called "hashar nashar"? Someone on youtube has a couple of them uploaded. ^_^ ... oh and 300 is in theatres this week. [trailer] "This .. is .. SPARTAAAA!!!!!" *kick* ... Must keep myself away from as many reviews/spoilers as possible... And that cold rain spell is coming too (again) haha!! w00t w00t!!!

Organizing stuff is cool. Especially when you've got a Toshiba PDA from your khala who doesn't use it anymore which runs Windows Mobile. And Microsoft has actually done a pretty cool job. The OS is really good in terms of features and resource consumption. Plan stuff you have to get done, events you have to attend, deadlines to meet. The interface is really good! Then you have a recorder built-in the PDA. Attach interview/lecture sound clips to your notes. With built-in wifi, bluetooth and gprs support its great and the battery lasts for more than 4-5 days and its quite light too! Now I know what I'll buy once I start a job, a brand spanking new PDA :D ... 5 years ago I had this crappy LCD Palm III... Hassan had the one with the color LCD... Since then features in PDAs have matured alot! Staying connected to the internet, 24/7 online on skype with a quality GPRS/GSM connection is all you'd need. *yawn*

Oh and some of you know about the Fu Manchu. Its days are numbered. The eliteness is over. First Topi, then Islamabad, then finally home: Lahore. Everyone I met recognized me after a second glance. Weird at first, but then everyone gets used to a new look and it doesn't look that bad after all. But in a week or two, it'll be gone... I have a couple of interviews coming my way.. *fingers crossed*... so *coughs* must look presentable... who's going to hire a truck driver engineer anyway :P .... ok i cant remember anything else *yawn* ...... must..... sleep.......

Hello again. Welcome to the new monthly edition of The Rain Machine. *keeeelaping*

The last month I've been with friends helping them out with stuff. Last week we performed 3 short plays of Anton Chekhov at Alhamra (Mall Road). Most of you guys might remember Tughral Turab who did "The Bear" at GIK's drama festival. He directed the three plays - namely: "The Proposal", "The Dangers of Tobacco Smoking" and "The Festivities"... Cast included polly, amin hussain, sidra, aleem.. 2 months of work finally paid off. The show was a success. Though all three days we never got the hall more than 80% full (approximately 350 people.. not sure.. oh and it was during the weekdays) the audience remained glued to their seats for one and half hour and left the hall with smiles on their faces. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. We had quite a media presence there. We got interviewed by some youth magazine (dont know what the name was) and also by PTV (yay!!.. but they said it'll be aired around 8 in the morning... eh). I'll be getting the photos and probably the video too and I'll host them here. Right now it only has the sounds used for 2 of the plays and the hall music :P

I've started using last.fm. Its good for tracking your music listening and helps you find bands you might like. Its a social networking site but unlike orkut, it revolves around the idea of networking people based on their music listening habits.

Holiday season is reaching its peak and there are so many things to buy. The most interesting of all is the new nintendo wii ... This console isnt for couch potatoes and button mashers! The controllers pick your arm movements and sends them to the wii's sensor bar wirelessly. Nintendo wanted to bring something new to the gaming industry and something that would be fun. For just $250 compared to the other next generation consoles, the wii is worth it ... Most people who play video games, dont play for the realistic graphics or storyline alone. Its the fun factor. The gameplay. And the gameplay depends alot on the storyline, the graphics, the sounds, the controls and the camera view...

There's a wrist band in case you lose grip of the wii controller. However, there have been cases of gamers over exerting themselves and breaking their TV sets ... *ouch* !! Wii have a problem is a site with stories of unfortunate circumstances when playing the new nintendo wii :P ... (mostly broken TV sets)

Here's a funny Wii vs PS3 G4's commercial that shows "how a Wii can be cheap and fun, and how a PS3 can be big and well... not fun." A fat nerdy ps3 girl vs a jolly playful hot wii chick.. :P

Now Sony with its expensive Playstation3 is going to be a huge flop. This is highly inevitable. Given that its really really powerful and has a BluRay disc drive. But do I see anything on BluRay yet?? BluRay is mostly to blame if the PS3 sinks. Supply not meeting its demand on the day the $600 PS3 was launched which resulted in a few people getting mugged. A guy waited for 7 hours in line till he got his PS3, then just minutes later 5 people come up to him, beat him up and run away with his PS3. And if thats not enough, a group of people bought a console just for the sake of gaining attention (*coughs* whoops! :P ...) by smashing the PS3 into pieces. *double ouch* !! here's the video. After the huge publicity that followed, they started smashing other consoles :P ... its funny and at the same time stupid..

On the other hand, Microsoft seems to have won the console war. Something which seemed impossible 3 years ago. The xbox360, its online community and a number of great games coming on that title says it all. I want an xbox360!!! In case your wondering there have been cases of hacking the xbox360 to play pirated games, but Microsoft has been swift in banning machine IDs of hacked xbox360s so beware. By banning the ID you cannot make it to the online xbox live community. I heard Gears of War on the xbox360 is just awesome!!

Microsoft entered the video games market with its xbox. The xbox360 is its second console and in my opinion it has successfully beaten Sony and its Playstation3. Recently, Microsoft also entered the mp3 player market where Apple's ipod has 85% of the market share. A review of Microsoft's "iPod Killer" named the Zune has shed light on some interesting features.

Its got a big screen. Its got a radio tuner. Its got a wifi thingie too. Its User Interface is awesome! Supports xbox360. Allows you to transfer songs to your friend's Zune via wifi. BUT its tightly wrapped in DRM. Though the iPod is also, but the Zune's makes it scare people like me from buying it..

Transferring songs via wifi comes with a condition. Your friend cannot listen to the song more than thrice and the song remains on his Zune for not more than 3 days. Even if the song you sent is copyright or not. Which sort of kills the idea. But since its wifi, there'll be a hack to get that thing right. Oh and you can't use the Zune as a hard drive like the iPod. But there's a hack to fix it. The hack applies to the computer you hook it up with, not the Zune, which means you'd need to apply the hack to other computers whenever you want to access the Zune Hard Drive... Its bigger and heavier than the iPod video. And the Zune has 30 GB of space whereas the iPod video comes in 60 and 80 GB.... Read the review if you're thinking of getting a Zune. I think I'll stick to my iPod for now.

Yay! I finally took the time to get rid of that evil empty space bug. That "small" bug made my blog look really ugly... But after using my special supernatural powers I added a curse to my .CSS spellbook and voila!!!

I got rid of the extra stuff from the navigation bar... Click on the Sonic Box (or the Ring Box) to make that section expand or collapse! neat huh? ^^ ... Making the blog took sometime collecting graphics from the Sonic video game... Ingame background scenes and sprites were taken from this really cool site called The Leaf Forest Zone that has all the sprites and background images that exist in the game.. I made the Sonic animated gif standing at the bottom of this page using a spritesheet (also from The Leaf Forest Zone). and in case you've noticed: those red, grey, purple gems are called chaos emeralds. There've been lots of Sonic related Flash Animations and Cartoons on Newgrounds! And most of the animations had taken spritesheets and backgrounds from The Leaf Forest Zone.

Reincarnation of the 16-bit Realm

.. Benjamin Breeg too, but this month or so its the 16-bit Realm. I've gone nuts playing my old Sonic Collection on the SEGA Genesis! This sudden theme change is for the best and coolest game and game character of the mid 90s! The game that ruled the 16-bit Realm.

I played Sonic 3 again then played Sonic & Knuckles. One day I was reading a couple of articles and stuff about Sonic's 15th Birthday, I came across one with lots of hidden secrets that I never knew existed in the game. I did collect all the chaos emeralds, finish the game with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles but wait... there's more???? o_O

The Master Emerald.. So that what they called that 'bigger' emerald.. Apparently becoming Super Sonic wasn't the last thing, there was something called 'Hyper Sonic'... I just had to play as Hyper Sonic and see what other special levels get unlocked.. It was a fun walk down memory lane.. The good old days. The only incentive in getting up early in the morning every weekend was to start playing Sonic and get as further as possible, before the grown ups get up and hijack the Television ^^ ...

K, I'll be tweaking this really buggy template when i get more time.. so far so good :D

Galloway pwns SKY

A week ago UK MP George Galloway was interviewed live on sky news (video). And after 10 minutes of him on air, he earned oceans of respect from many people who see the current Israeli war on Lebanon as not just a war of aggression and show of military might but as another chapter in Israel's decades old illegal occupation and economic/social suffocation of Palestinians. George Galloway: I salute you! Sky took a really good beating for its clear biased coverage of the conflict.

... sweet pwnage!!! Notice:
1) The newscaster got ticked off and at times her voice stuttered. They stopped showing her on the other half of the screen! lol.
2) Sky kept toying with the volume of the video being played on the left to try mute Galloway.

I cant wait to see Galloway in action on FOX news. Bill O'Reilly would probably mute him and call him an idiot before even letting Galloway finish IFF that ever happens!!

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year old again.

I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant.

I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks.

I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them.

I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer's day.

I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care.

All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset.

I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible.

I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again.

I want to live simply again. I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones.

I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, humankind, and making angels in the snow.

So....here's my checkbook and my car-keys, my credit card bills and my 401K statements.

High Seven

Its been a very eventful week ending with a lighter wallet and an unbearable stomach ache!! Guess I'll have to stop eating out like crazy, wait and sort other stuff out.. The affects of losing 5 years of contact numbers still hurts *curses thief* ... Plus lately things haven't turned out as they ought to, but I guess its better to keep your chin up instead of jumping into a depression-pit. *shrugs* .. And on the brighter side, it isn't that bad either..

Everyday: waking up around 9. Check email, read bookmarks. Boring afternoons watching TV or spending time at home or grandmom's place (in the next block). Sleeping around midnight, max by 2 a.m. Something would pop near the evening and I'd be going with a few people to some place (new and old). Sometimes spend extra bucks on dessert or cold coffee.. Now. I hate going to some place new or try a new dish.. Its the fear of ordering something crappy and then repenting the fact that you just wasted two hundred something rupees that makes you want to just order just the thing you know tastes really really good.. But how'd you know if the BBQ Sandwich is as good as the Mexican Steak Cheese Sandwich... :/ ... Stupid decisions... There should be something like a "trial version"... Order a free trial BBQ Sandwich, taste it and develop an opinion about that dish before you actually order the real thing! :D ... *dreams of opening such a restaurant* ... Oh and its going to be better than zouk shmouk. Really classy decor :D ... The name should be really cool!!. Something really catchy... The word would have the z and x letters if possible to make it sounds 'cool'... Like people put a z at the end of lol to make it sound cool... lolz!!! *shakes head* ... khair... :|

Me and I-T roaming around defence discovered a place I-T's sister once heard about. A small cafe with a couple of tables, chairs, sofas and shelves of books. You go there, fetch a book, sit under the fan :D and read. And in case ur stomach bothers you, signal the waiter and get a little 'something' and continue... Its new in Lahore. Excellent!!.. Uptown Cafe its called, in the Defence N block market... I-T's been a frequent visitor reading the Google Book.. I read reviews about it and for all techgeeks its a must read. hehe :D

Azi was in Lahore after he gave his Microsoft interview in dubai.. The evil motusilla sucked up lahore's electricity around the evening and summoned the storm-demon to reck havoc. Returning from the techlogix interview we got thru the blinding wind and rain dodged falling signboards and lampposts, and saw a huge old tree fall block the road - shit that was scary... Oh and I tried visiting Aitchison. Guess what? "Order nai hai".. bleh~ ... And the tree fell on sunder daas road!! :D

Aitchison. Its the same (from the outside) except for a new building: the examination centre or whatever they actually call it.. I hope its not called Shamim Block.. lol... heh, and if anyone of us wants to teach there, I heard they'd prefer an Old-boy as long as he is competent in the subject and "can control the class" .. hahahaha .. Oh and since most of us are returning, why dont we go and meet Kashmiri, Naila Burney, Amir Hussain, (Raja?) and the rest.. heh :P

Anywayyyyy, Azi, I-T and I roamed around defence, and experimented with Azi's new awesome Canon camera! Since there was no electricity, we decided to order pizza and enjoy the weather and eat on the balcony!! rad!! There we toyed a bit more with motus's canon. Azi planned to stay just the night, but we convinced him to stay another day... And another day after that.. hee hee... Then he really had to jet.. That following day came Raptor and the eating spree began! I-T took some cool clips from his video camera.. Lets wait for the remaining 20 minutes of the tape to finish and see what it is after the capturing and editing. Its going to be really cool :D ...

For the first time in my life I (tried?) kept a neat mild beard for just 2 weeks. Just for the heck of it. Just to see what I look like.. lol... And that's my last time, ever!! Whenever you're eating something (like cake), you get this feeling that some of the icing might be on your beard, but its not :S ... It felt good that most relatives welcomed the neat beard, who used to make a huge fuss during the days when I kept different hairstyles (especially the long hair...) Plus moustaches feel weird.. When in the sun, sweat on ur moustache gets really irritating.... bleh~ The surprising thing was when my youngest (4 year old) cousin really got along with me. But after the shave, he was the same scaredy ass cousin!!! :\

Nash lives just 5 houses away from mine. He's a really busy person, on the edge and working in 3 companies at the same time.. heh, so whenever we're free at the same time we'd chill, talk techie stuff, talk giki/netronix(...plus about the time kami turned into darth vader!! hee hee), eat, walk & get eats :P He's the same ol person that was in 45/5 but now he has a new friend/enemy named 'Bob' ... And Bob's evil. His influence over Nash is scary. One day there'll be more a Bob and no Nash.. kekeke

Oh and i tried artpad like basim and I-T recommended, and its really cool! On the page: u draw on a canvas with brushes of different sizes and colors, add text shmext, and smither paint, frame it and hang it in the gallery for others to marvel at.. :D ... I made the one above (centre) in just 5 minutes... Pretty cool!! Give it a try, see what stuff people have been able to make and be creative!! Something similar to artpad is zewall. Its relatively older, but its got really cool paintings and 'graffiti' ... Some of my MSN Display Pictures come from zewall.. tee hee... :#

I found an awesome site for those with ipods. 50 fun things to do!! Do read the Note near the end of the page.. hehe :P ... The thing I love about the ipod is its simplicity. Podcasts are really good especially for those who're always on the go and don't want to miss out on something interesting like music news, tech news, interviews etc. Its like downloading an episode of a radio show and listening to it afterwards.. You put ur ipod on its cradle at night, let it recharge and sync, then take it along with you and listen while you drive/work. I've subscribed to lots of podcasts. BBC and other news agencies have a podcast or two of their own too..

Once nash and rappy checked out my dad's really old Gramophone record player. Its a turntable with an arm that has a very sensitive pin (now rare to get).. That's hooked up to 2 huge speakers through an amplifier.. Place a record on the turntable and switch the turntable on... Use a fine brush to remove tiny dust particles.. gently move the arm over the record and when its above the starting track, use a small lever to let the arm descend and set the pin into the record tracks... Voila!!! \o/

You can hear the music playing at a very minute volume, if you switch the amplifier off and let the pin ride on the record... Dad bought it when he was in England before I was born. Now there are like over 150 records from the 1970s to the 1990s (Elvis, BeeGees, BoneyM, MJ, Eric Clapton, McCartney, Men at Work.. etc.) Maybe now you'll know why i never got into any other sort of music except angrezi gaanay.. hehe.... Nash was amazed to see how the thing was able to survive and took a couple of pictures plus a video of me gently taking the record off the turntable and putting it into its album sleeve... Playing records on it after so many years made me realize how times have changed... People used to buy these huge records that came in artistic album covers and detailed sleeves filled with album art and lyrics.. People used to take some time out and enjoy listening to the music, stare at the detailed work of art on the cover, and read stuff on the sleeve.. Now, its different dont you think?

eeeek!!! o_O ... There's so much left, and so much I've forgotten :ok, this draft has been growing for a while, I'll let this publish and plant another one... :P

The Pre-Convocation Graduate

Hey everyone!
I've been trying to post something new since last november but because I've been really busy with my last semester, final year project and bla bla that they end up in the drafts section. Anyway, my last semester in the jungle* is over. Its time to pack up, get my clearance done (which is one big headache), empty my room, attend the convocation ceremony, collect my degree and farewell. Another era of my life has come to an end. Now its me doing a job someplace somewhere era.

There's so much to tell about the past 5 months! My incomplete Naran Trip story, the never-ending-earthquake season, ipod and podcasts :D, projects, job hunting, interviews, open house, how a salesperson feels like, water fights, packet wars, CS, high speed carrera 911 races, screaming competitons, WoW on a cracked server, running up the hill (also known as togik), the FBI weekend, back to hanging upside down from the tree, recovering my most valuable hard drive, the hike up to the giki fence, pranks with the NCA folks, the Batch T-shirt, the RAR (Run after Rao), Injuring my fibula tibia (heel bone) that got better after 3 painful weeks, running into the must-run-away situation, return of the first must-run-away situation (this is only for hissam) :P ... and what else...

Prison Break is the most awesome-est TV series ever... heh, well who am i?? Southpark is the only other TV series I watch.. so.. umm.. but still.. Prison Break is really kick ass!! except for the last episode. Episode 22: Flight... that episode was the most disgusting season finale i've ever seen... Do not watch it... bleh~
oh! and Kami got married last month.. yippie!!

Since I started looking for Templates and Themes for my blog I came across a number of useful websites. If you're really really good at HTML, PHP you'll be better off with weblogs.us and other sites that offer better services for advance users rather than Blogger. If you want it quick, easy and free and want to stick to Blogger, here's a list of sites that would help you spice up your blog :)

ShoutBoxes
Its a bit similar to 'adding a comment'. Many forums and bulletin boards have this feature. Its sort of a small chat room... Anyone can post in your shoutbox. They're also referred as "Tag-Boards". Its fun to have one :) ... There are many sites that offer this service.

Hacks, Tips & Tricks
When I was screwing around with HTML tags I placed a <'body'> tag in the itempage <'div'>. When I saw the preview the blogger bar appeared with the rest of the main text. It gave me an idea... >:D *chingggg*. Blogger sees your template and places its bar just before the last <'body'> tag :P ... And thats what i did. :D ... After sometime browsing I noticed there are a bunch of Blogger Hacks out there! You can make your blog display photos of those who posted comments... :D ... This is the forum post that led me to Blogger Hacks. Blogger itself has a hacks page in its help section. Do check out peek-a-boo comments. Two other sites have tons of more hacks, tips and tricks:

Counters & Referrers
There are many websites out there that offer free counters. Counters are good to keep track of how many people come to visit your blog. Most counters have their ugly names and/or annoying ads in it. Mostly people don't like having it in their counter... The one I'm using is by StatCounter. You can choose the type of counter you want and pretty much customize most of it. It gives you detailed information about the hits your counter got along with detailed statistics and stuff (from graph illustrations to IP Addresses of your visitors). Other than counters, you can show a list of pages that brought visitors to your blog.. This small service is provided by Referer.org and TrueFresco.org. Recently Google started something similar called Google Analytics. Its a must see :)

Well thats about it I guess. Loads of goodies :P ... All you need is a bunch of spare time and voila!! :D

It has begun! I'm banging my head against the wall with messy HTML and Meta tags.. :/ I'm googling like crazy for templates and stuff. Getting something from here, a tab bit from there. Sugar. Spice. And everything nice. But not anything girly :P ... Some of you might know what type of theme i'm trying to acquire for my blog.

Anyway. I turned my blog completely pink, black, and shocking green... and i still cant understand some of the CSS Styles. Making a hybrid like I am, is tough as shit!! :/ ... I'll be posting useful links later. Back to my hit-n-trial efforts of getting this baby spiced up :D

I was browsing around randomly and came across this picture. lol... Its from a museum exhibit called Illegal Art. From the name it sounds a history of naughty, dirty and explicit pictures but its not. Copyright holders have threatened and sued many of the artists here for sampling, remixing, and recontextualizing other people's artistic creations without permission. Check it out.

Holidays: so far so good... so what??

The past week was full of travelling... Spending Eid with family in Islamabad. Going around meeting relatives.. A brunch at Pir Sohawa. A Daewoo bus loaded with chinese tourists came to the place later on. All in white bucket hats, backpacks and cameras. Food sucked which usually isnt the case. Made me sick for a day or so. I bet those chinese tourists would be cussing in chinese :S ... or would they cuss in english?? :S ... "Yuck Fou!!" :S
*shakes head*
Anyway, I had no access to the internet at my Grandparent's place in Islamabad. I felt being disconnected :P ... Spending 4 to 5 days there was tough, but having 5 young cousins around (aging from 1 year to 3 year olds) kept each day from being as boring as shit.

Me finally back home in Lahore for another week. Pappi (aka Osman Arif) is here too till mid November. Our NUS wouldve-been-engineer turned AKU will-be-doctor spent the summers (around 2 months) with his family and elder sister in USA and later met up with the other guys. Huj, RA-ing at LUMS, left for India on the 8th. He'd be debating in Bangalore representing LUMS.
Ugh, I want to graduate too :P

RSX Diploma!
Back to good old late-night browsing, I clicked on some ad that led me to getting an Acura RSX Diploma from the Acura RSX Institute, lol.. crazy... :P ... Check it out. Its a really cool 3D flash based website. You have to "earn credits" to get a diploma, and you get 100% after you've "gone through the whole site 100%" lol... :P ... If you've got a slow crappy internet connection, don't bother clicking.

Actually I came up with the 2 words just like that. Didn't have to mean anything. Rain: obviously taken from my nickname on IRC. But now I plan to start a small stupid story, post every week or so and have a small flash animation with each post. Its a fun idea i'd like to start on whenever I get the time. :D

Almost 20 days have past. Earthquakes of an average magnitude of 4.5 are quite common now.. :S I keep a glass of water on my desk, that tells when a quake is coming (remember jurrasic park :P) which also confirms its not me shaking. Oh and the wooden doll that rayhan gave me, dances when a quake comes :P ... Oh well, We're all back to normal. I'm listening to soundtracks of the Sonic the Hedgehog videogame. Freeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!. Midterms over. Presentations over. Here comes the much awaited 2 weeks holidays :D ... Besides all that:

I've been using Mozilla Firefox for quite some time now. Lately, I added a number of extensions and stuff some of which were recommended to me by friends... Its really awesome! Firefox's tab browsing feature is the best. No multiple windows of Internet Explorer to go thru. All your pages open in multiple tabs in ONE window in firefox. And with extensions it becomes even powerful! :D

Session Saver: First of the extensions and the best in my opinion. It keeps taking backups of your work in firefox (histories, favourites, tab status). This usually happens that i've got a dozen tabs opened, and I suddenly have to restart my PC. Closing firefox would mean I'd lose every page. But with this extension, I can close firefox anytime, restart (or shut down), log in, and run firefox. It automatically reloads everything to what i left it as.
Mozilla Archive Format: I usually save some webpages as .mht files. This could be done in Internet Explorer and not in firefox. But with this extension I'm able to save pages in firefox as .mht documents along with other features.
Highlighter: Small text highlighting tool, that highlights stuff on webpages.
FlashGot: My favourite download manager is FlashGet (previously known as JetCar). Its 5 times better than Getright and way way better than the spyware Download Accelerator (bleh!!). With this extension, I can redirect whatever I want to download to my FlashGet download manager.
IE View: hehe, a small and simple extension. In case i want to open a page I'm viewing in firefox to open in Internet Explorer, I just have to right click and click on "View this page in IE".
Web Developer: For those who do web development of course would love this. I has a variety of tools and options that let you study any website you open in firefox.
StumbleUpon: A good thing when you want to kill time and have nothing better to do. Many people say its really really addictive. StumbleUpon is an extension that gives you any website depending on your interests and you have the option to rate it, write a review and recommend to other StumbleUpon members. Its a nice fun way of surfing the internet where you find alot of new and interesting stuff. Do give it a try..

After a busy Friday evening, I was awake all night and had sehri just after finishing my last post. Forced myself to go to bed by 7:30 in the morning and was asleep in a few minutes. But what happened afterwards the real thing is totally indescribable.

(for those of you who do not know: my university (near Tarbela Dam) is 120 km north-west of Islamabad and just a few 10 km's away from the epicenter of the earthquake (click here to see how far we are) between 7.8 by the japanese, 7.6 according to the others.)

Suddenly my bed started jumping. I could feel myself in the air for a brief moment. Stuck in a state of shock and awe, I just couldn't think what was happening, instead kept staring at the ceiling. It looked as if my room was a small little box vibrating vigorously!! Shaking as if there were rocket thrusters beneath. :S As if it was on the move. Took me around 10 to 20 seconds to realize that this was not a dream, this was for real. Is this the end, or is it not? What is happening? Why is it happening? Is it really an earthquake? Is it a huge sonic-boom? Is there a war going on? Did a bomb go off? Doesn't sound like it... :S Seems some heavy machinery is traveling beneath my room? Is this how it feels to be riding a huge waveform?

Still staring at the ceiling, screaming from within that its going to finish... Now? .... Or now? .... Is it? And as I kept hoping it finishes the more violent and louder the quake got. Stationary on my desk and shelves clapped against each other, cupboard and windows chattered frequently. Time was either flying or was at a standstill. I couldn't tell. However, after quite some time, I managed to force myself to jump from my frozen state - knowing that I'm trembling so much that I wont be able to unlock the door - I jumped into my wardrobe (which is below a huge beam).

Never felt anything like this, literally felt how it's like to "hold on to dear life". Seeing the room from a different angle made it even more scary. I closed my eyes and prayed that this goes away. Minutes later (which felt never ending) the 'amplitude' of the quake reduced, which gave me enough courage to quickly grab my cell phone, unlock my door, and run like anything!!!

Outside and into the open, meeting a sea of students. Some were in their boxers. Everyone was terrified. The quake was still in action. I quickly sat down on the stairs outside the hostel and took huge signs of relief. Thankfully, the hostels were strong enough to withstand that enormous earthquake. After 15 to 20 minutes of after shocks, thinking it was all over, most of the students moved into the hostel's common room (adjacent to the main doors) switched on the television to know what's going on. From 9 a.m. to 12 noon, within every 10 to 15 minutes, another earthquake struck and again scores of people ran out. After shocks were constantly being felt nonetheless.

First of all, I called up home and told them that I was perfectly safe. Surprisingly they also experienced a 'horrible earthquake'. Other friends having relatives and families in Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, found out that they all felt a 'horrible earthquake'. This left us thinking where the epicenter was. An hour later, local news channels reported that the Margalla Towers in Islamabad collapsed. I had relatives either in that tower or in the neighboring ones. Tried calling them up, but the network was too busy. After every 5 minutes another quake struck :\ All this got very exhausting.

There were mixed feeling about the earthquake. Everyone had a different way of dealing with the terror. The serious ones, those who were affected by the quake and those who lost loved ones, sat silently on the stairs and spoke to no one. The rest were laughing it off. Trying to make fun of the other. Whatever it was, I was just sick and tired of the constant shaking and after shocks and a few frequent earthquakes, that I fled to lie down on a huge open ground and tried to sleep (which i couldn't) till evening. After opening my fast, the sky was quickly filled with huge dark clouds. A storm began in minutes. It was a sign from God. He isn't happy at all.

By then, all the aftershocks and earthquakes made every muscle in my body tired. It had induced a headache and frequently shivering muscles/limbs. Standing on the ground for more than a minute made you feel that there's another earthquake, but you're wrong, its only you and your body/imagination/fear. Then there's this fear, that if your body's trembling you wont be able to feel whether there is an earthquake. Knowing that there is one is better than not knowing at all.. :S .. ugh, scary! :/

Till the end of the 8th of October, we all still in fear, got used to the after shocks and frequent earthquakes.. It was frustrating, annoying, depressing, confusing. I've never seen myself like this ever.
(I've still got a minor headache, and i dont know what I've typed so far, hehe.. I'll post what happened on the 9th later)

Mofo Mobo!!

Ah! its been weeks since I last posted anything here. Something hard to do once the semester begins. Oh well, a lots been happening and I hate forgetting. In the first weeks of the semester my computer started acting weirdly :S ... (I'll cut the techincal bullcrap) I bought a new power supply unit since the old one leaked current. That didn't work :/ later I noticed a smell come from the casing. The kind of smell you get when u burn a battery :S .. To prevent any damage, I disconnected everything and got a friend to check what the problem was... Turned out that my motherboard was malfunctioning. I had to get a new one from Lahore and all the while when i was without a computer, life seemed so much handycapped... :
I was using a DM850 or whatever the model number of the motherboard is ... The one with the failed ram technology known as RDRAM. Bought the motherboard and ram 3 years ago when it was thought to be the best (and really pricy). Now the motherboard and ram technology is said to be "Intel's biggest failure". Someone else said Intel said it themselves that the motherboard was "flawed". Oh well, since i was getting a new one curiosity struck. I gave the old motherboard power and watched what happened after the smelling phase. Staring at the motherboard, I suddenly notice a thread of smoke coming from the bottom edge. I flipped the casing upside down and kept staring :D ... The really small portion of the edge from where the smoke was coming from started to melt. A few black bubbles popped out of the black melting part.. Then suddenly a few bright sparks ignited a little fire :D ... Till this moment i was in shock and awe, once the fire started to 'grow', I pulled the power plug out and blew the fire out...

Now I have a NEW motherboard!! :D 512 MB DDR dual channel!! yay for me! :P
But with the type of stuff i do :/ i need more RAM, thus im saving some money.

After a busy week. I'm back in Swabi for my last year in GIK. And its back to university routine. :\ Oh and after 3 years, I got rid of my precious commoner phone - the nokia 3310 :P which had frequent battery problems, rare LCD screen 'snowing' and a hit-to-make-work ringer. Thanks a lot to Adeel Shafkat (the technosexual - if there's such a word :S that means a person who cant live without awesome high tech gadgets), I got a new 2600 for a good price.

I had a terrible 5 hours non-stop ride sitting in a crowded van. We booked the one that has room for 14 people. Since we had loads of boxes, suitcases, bags, computer casings and monitors to take along, only 9 guys could fit in. All sweaty and exhausted I enter my dusty room at 5:30 pm after more than 3 months. I shower and before unpacking, took a nice 4 hours nap. After unpacking and wasting a lot of time in the hostels, its now quarter to 6 am. I just remembered I hadn't eaten all day :S
eeeek!!!

Oh and here are pictures of my home in T block, Defence. In another 2 months will be moving in :)

I've been going around showing people my blog and asking who the Mad Brownie Man is. I just needed to know the name of this thing to be able to search on google. I tried searching for "stfu n00b" but it returned other pictures and made me deviate from my initial objective. I searched for "brown puppet", "evil brown" :S

One day I was out since the morning. Going around the shadman area in lahore. Before heading home I dropped by at Huj's place (a friend since college). While showing him my blog I asked who the heck the mad brownie guy was. He said it was some japanese character on some show for children. AHA!! A clue! But he didnt know the name of the thing. So when I got home I tried google again. Searched for "japanese cartoon", "japanese puppet brown" etc. No Luck :

For example, I'd think of a word and put a .com or .org to see if there is something like that... Today, I tried noob.com and n00b.com .. See for yourselves, especially the later! Its a community of noobs!!! And they've got stuff to say against those who ridicule them!

Then I went to wikipedia.com and searched what it had on the subject. It said:
